Word Power

It all started with the word “oblivion”…It means Forgetfulness.
I picked up this word from one of the presentations yesterday.

Over the conversation with my colleague I told
“We are so plain English speaking people. The richness of the vocab is not used in our day to day talks”

She said
“As long as we are able to communicate with whatever English we speak it should be fine”

I seem to disagree. Richness of the language seems to be buried only in literature and books…
If we put them to use in oral form, conversations would be more interesting and engaged…
We seem to be just lazy to construct sentences with more accurate and precise connotation of the word.

Don’t you agree…?

This is not to show-off your word power…No…it’s just making use of the existing words, which otherwise would perish.

I love approximations

Am very bad with conversions. Very lazy.
But am equally fond of approximations. That saves a lot of brain energy for better purposes.

Just to illustrate this…
This one is for Bytes to MB conversions.

Most of our unix systems display the file sizes in Bytes and it takes few seconds to figure out and get a sense of the “fat”ness of the file.

Here’s a quick thumb rule : Just count the number of digits.

6 -> First three
5,7,8 -> First two

If you see Five digits over there…take the first two digits.
5: 14125 ->14 -> 14 KB

If you see six digits over there…take the first three digits. It’ll be in KB
6 : 121224 -> 121 -> 121 KB

If you see seven digits over there, then it’s marking the beginning of the MB.
7 : 1412246 ->14 -> 1.4 MB

If you see eight digits over there, take first two digits, it’ll be in MB.
8 : 14122467 ->14 -> 14 MB

Mungaru Male

I am no big fan or follower of movies. But this one, surely, is a hit among the masses. So I cant stop myself. Mungaru Male in Kannada.

It's a rage now. Magical and phenomenal success....
Kannada movie industry looks suddenly looks revived again...

I also happened to watch the movie two weeks back. It was refreshingly new. Nothing so very special. Yet something special..Dont know how to describe this.

Music has scored spectacularly well...I dont think I have hummed a tune, in recent memory, as many times in a day as this one.

The Hero, not so 'handsome hero types' at first look..is my favourite now.There are so many odds at times....and when there's a reversal of the turbulence....this is what happens. In all probabilities...next successful movie of this nature in Kannada would take a life time

BarCamp 3, Bangalore

Barcamp Bangalore is here. This is volume 3 edition.

IIM Bangalore, 31st March and 1st of April, 2007
This time around it claims to be zara hatke from previous versions.
Never been to IIM campus. This is a nice opportunity.
I would have almost missed attending this time, had the travel to Boston not postponed.

Bangalore to Boston

I may travel from Bangalore to Boston in a couple of days from now.
Am I excited ? Yes
But I don't think I am overly excited...though this would be my first ever trip across the seas.
For several reasons
- It would be a tighter three week packed office days.
- Weather isnt bright.
- India still in contention for the worldcup ? I dont want to miss a single moment of action.

Let's pray India thrashes Lankans today.

Philosophy for Beginners

I have this special love for graphically rich books.

I went to oxford bookstore at Leela yesterday. I could not resist deserting this book at the store.

Philosophy for beginners - Richard Osborne and Illustrated by Ralph Edney

It's a simple and easy to read book ( but not simplistic) and has history of all the philosophers dating back to 2500 years. A difficult and an abstract subject, yet it's so readable.

arvindtm.com

aaah...finally! I am a proud owner !
arvindtm.com site is up

I moved from http://arvindtm.blogspot.com to http://www.arvindtm.com
When I heard about custom domain service of google two months ago, i jumped out and bought a domain name with net4domains.com
But later found that net4domains.com do not provide the access to change CNAME records.
I was forced to move to some other service provider. I chose godaddy.com
I transferred the domain from net4domains to godaddy and waited patiently to see my home page showing up when I typed www.arvindtm.com

It happened finally after two of months wait..

Evolution of WLAN 802.11 standard

Evolution of WLAN standards.
I wonder why didn’t they choose to name it this way: a to b to g ?
802.11a -> 802.11b -> 802.11g

Shifting Gear lever

I noticed this morning, in a four wheeler, that that the gear shifting lever can be moved to some other place
In the Sumo transport vehicle, the driver enjoys more width than he actually require.
This extra width is provided by that gear lever.
If you move that to a place somewhere else… ( I don’t know where, a gearless vehicle…?! ) it can seat an extra person in the front.
Just because of that small stick it has reduced the seating capacity.

TCP split into TCP and IP

We all know about IPv4 and IPv6. But that doesn't lead us to think about previous versions.

There were versions like
TCPv1
TCPv2
Later it was split into TCP and IP in 1978 as TCPv3 and IPv3
Finally we arrived at TCP v4 and IPv4
